Hold on tight for this update, as we’ve been experiencing loaaaads of new experiences again! This week has been all about motorized vehicles…
Day 10
We woke up fairly late and had a nice sleep in. We had some breakfast and did some internetting, writing previous blogpost. Afterwards we relaxed in our room and picked up the airtickets from the agency.
That night we went to the nightmarket. Once there we found some nice stuff we actually wanted to buy. We didn’t bring much money, so we decided to go back and get more money. I was in dying need of a watch, as I had no clue what time we were living in – let alone the date. We grabbed a taxi back to our hostel to get some more money. Once back at the market I bought me a nice new watch, similar to the one I have back at home. Luc bought a watch as well. We also bought two t-shirts. When we were bargaining with the girl about the price for the shirts, she actuall ran off to find our sizes at another market stall. We waited patiently and in the end she returned with our shirts. We had to bargain about the price with a calculator which had the size of an A4 paper. Really ridiclous!
That night we had a little drink next to our hostel at a bar run by a British guy called John. We were planning on having just one beer and a play of pool. But it ended up to be a long night, having a great conversation with John. Mainly talking about the Thai culture and the differences between Thailand and Europe.
Day 11
The next morning we had to wake up fairly early. We had to check out at 10 AM as were flying out of Chiang Mai a few hours later. We had some breakfast and swam a little bit in the swimming pool of the hotel. Later on we grabbed a taxi to the airport. We flew from Chiang Mai into Bangkok. The flight was not the best I have ever had. Lots of turbulance, especially once we were trying to land. In the end we did land fine. The flight took about an hour, much better than the 13 hours by nighttrain.
Once landed we had to wait for 2,5 hours at Bangkok airport. It turned out to be a nice wait, as at Bangkok airport they tend to have a nice business lounge for all transfer passengers. Including free popcorn, drinks and other snacks. We sat down in the nicely decorated lounge playing Sudoku. Afterwards we flew into Koh Samui – a 50 minute flight. We got to Koh Samui around 20:00. The airport looked like a bamboo-hut, which was something I had never seen before. As soon as you get to the island, it feels relaxed and very chilled. We grabbed a shuttlebus to our hostel where I made a reservation a few days earlier. The owner, a young Italian guy, welcomed us. It was funny to be on the other side of the world speaking Italian. We checked in and found ourselves in an alright room with air conditioning. After a nice shower I asked Luigi where we could get some good pizza, as Koh Samui is full of Italian restaurants. We went over to the nearest pizza-place we could find and had a really good pizza for less than 5 euro’s. That night we went to bed early, as we were completely broken after the day of traveling.
Day 12
The next day we had a nice sleep in. We woke up around 11 AM. Once awake we found ourselves in paradise. A perfect blue sky, hot sunny weather with pearl white beaches with palm trees. And everything 5 minutes from our accomodation.. Amazing! We had some breakfast and went to lay on the beach. We spent the rest of the day on the beach, playing with a newly bought rugby ball and the likes. Afterwards we spoke to two dutch girls who had been here for a few days. I ate some corn on the beach, like they do in Brasil. Later on we went back to our hostel where we had a shower. Afterwards we went to explore the island a little bit more on foot. We searched for an all-you-can-eat place the dutch girls had been talking about. It was supposed to be 2 euro’s for the whole meal – which sounded good to us. Unfortunately after walking around, we couldn’t find it. We ended up eating some chickensoup at a market place… Not exactly what we were trying to get..
Afterwards we headed back to the main strip and ended up at Mcdonalds, to get some food we could actually trust. After a few chicken wings we headed off to find a club we wanted to go to. It;s supposed to be the best club in town, so we were eager to check it out. We ended up in a side-alley full of bars with hookers who were all trying to get our attention – and I mean, dozens of them. Luc was being touched around his nipples and bottoms. Fairly uncomfortable – as you would imagine – we walked through the street. Once at the end of the street we found ourselves fairly lost. Just then three English girls asked us whether we were going to the club too. We confirmed and they told us they had been there the night before too. We ended up being lost, as we were heading into the wrong direction. We grabbed a taxi which brought us back to where we were supposed to go. After a nice chat with the English girls, they headed off to get money.
Only a few minutes later we bumped into the dutch girls we had met on the beach that afternoon. We had a few drinks with them too. We then headed off to the dancefloor and danced the night away. The dutch girls had to leave early the next day, so they headed off too. Luc and I kept on dancing until the club closed around 3 AM. At closing time we met a few Scottish girls who brought us to another club. We danced some more until about 5 in the morning. Around 5 we had enough and headed back home. The scottish girls had some problems finding their friend who had the keys of their hostel. They walked back through the mainstreet. Once we said bye to the Scottish girls – and wished them luck with their key – we finally went to sleep.
Day 13
The next day started late. We had a sleep in – again. We headed to the beach and played with our rugby ball. After a nice lunch on the beach we decided to rent a jetski. Renting a jetski in Thailand is incredibly cheap. We payed for 30 minutes about 16 euro’s (800 baht). We had the best time ever. The jetski’s were 1400CC whcih meant pretty damned fast. We raced across the water for a good 30 minutes, going from one end of the bay to the other, Really great!
Once back at the hotel we had a shower and dinner at a nice restaurant called Captain Kirk. A rooftop restaurant which overlooked the mainstreet of Koh Samui. We had some nice spareribs. After the spareribs we decided to go back home as the next day we were planning on renting a scooter to ride around the island.
Day 14
We woke up around 10AM. We checked out of our hostel as we the hostel was fully booked. We had some breakfast and we headed to our new accomodation, From there we rented two scooters. We explored the island for the rest of the afternoon, whcih was really great. We had the best fun. The scooters came with plastic helmets which were doing more worse than good. They also happened to go extremely fast – nearly 100KM/H. Obviously we didn’t drive that fast, considering the roads are not as good as they are back home. We took it easy, especially as the guidebook and some locals warned us of the many fatalaties in traffic due to tourists driving like crazy on these two-wheeled vehicles. It all turned out to be fine. We explored to whole island, seeing waterfalls, mummified monks, a big buddha and lots of really nice scenery. All of this for 4 euro’s a day!! (that’s what renting a scooter here costs). We ended the day with a nice Mexican meal somewhere on the mainstreet. Not the cheapest meal we have had – but really nice.
Afterwards we had a nice chat with the owner of the restaurant, who happened to be a Canadian. We talked for about an hour about Thailand and his life around here. We then headed back to the hotel as we were going on a tour the next day exploring the 40 protected islands near here.
Day 15
We woke up around 6:30AM. We got dressed, returned our scooters to the reception of the hotel and were then picked up by a van of the tour-company. They took us to the dock from where our boat was departing. We had some bread for breakfast at the dock. Then we headed up to the speedboat. It took about an hour to get to the spot where we were going to do some snorkeling. It was a spot full of coral. Of course I managed to cut my foot again. This time I won’t get it infected though, I know the symptons by now.
After the snorkeling we headed to the next spot, a beautiful spot where we went to a viewingpoint and overlooked all of the islands – some really nice photos. After the viewingpoint we headed to another islands where we had lunch. It felt like being in paradise on the white beaches with the palm trees and the blue water. After lunch we went kayaking around some of the smaller islands. After the Kayaking we headed back to the Koh Samui which took another good hour. Once back we had a shower, had some dinner and did some internetting.
We are planning to stay for one more day before we’re heading to Koh Tao where I’ll be doing some diving. Stay tuned for updates!
