After leaving Christchurch this morning with the KiwiExperience bus, we arrived in KaiKoura late this morning. During the trip to Kaikoura the busdriver gave us the oppertunity to book some of the activities which you’re able to do in the destination you’re heading to. Then the guy books the excursion for you, and once you arrive all is already set and done. I had the choice of Whale watching, Swimming with dolphins or Swimming with seals. I immediately chose for swimming with the dolphins. Just 2 hours after we arrived in Kaikoura, I was already putting on a wetsuite to start snorkeling. After a brief instruction video about how to it all works and how to snorkle, we went with a bus to a motorboat. After about 40 minutes on the sea, they were able to spot some dolphins. Then we went for our first dive. It was just amazing! It’s incredible how close they actually get to you. They swim round beneath you or next to you. If you make some sounds through your snorkle, you’re able to attract them even more and they will come back and swim with you. It was a a wonderful experience, and I never expected them to be this close to me. After a couple of minutes they swam away and we went back to the boat. Then we went searching for another group of dolphins again. After a couple of minutes we found another group and off we went again. We have been repeating this stuff for about 50 minutes. We had about 6 or 7 dives in total. The last dive was the best one. We got to see loaaaaaaaads of dolphins. At some points there were 6 or7 dolphins swimming next to me at the same time. A really cool experience. I’ll upload a video I made on the boat later on.
That’s about it for now. Tomorrow I’ll be heading on to Nelson, where I am going to stay for a couple of days. I’ll report back later.
