Yesterday we went to the big Glacier in Franz Josef. Too bad the weather didn’t really work out for us.. It had been great weather for the last 10 days, but exactly the day we went the weatherforecasts expected rain. Not too weird, considering the glacier is in a rainforest, but still.. Early in the morning we went with a bus to the glacier and after putting on some gear and 3 layers of clothing we went up there. After about 30 minutes of walking we arrived at the foot of the glacier. There we had to put the spikes under our boots. Once we had that fixed we went up on to the icy mountain. The guide told us he wanted to do a walk different from the usual walks. He said he wanted to show us places where no-one else had walked before. After about 2 hours of walking we had lunch somewhere in the middle of the glacier. Right after we went on up onto the glacier. The guy “hacked” a way through the ice. At some points it was a bit scary and hard to climb up to the ice, especially since there were quite some gaps you could fall into if you didn’t pay attention. Once we arrived at a part no-one ever had been before, we had to wait for about 30 minutes, because the guide had to hack a way through, as there were no pathways to walk on there. We started to become really cold, but once we were walking again it was fine. At about 16:00 the rain started to poor down on us. It wasn’t too bad, but my bag got really wet. After some more walking we finally started to go down again. We arrived back on the ground at about 18:00. In total we had been walking for over 8 hours on the glacier. It was a really cool experience and I wouldn’t want to have missed it for the world, but it was a real adventure and not easy at some points. Once I arrived back at the hostel, I was too tired to do anything. I had a shower, ate some pizza and went to bed.
The next morning we had to get up at 6:30 because the bus was leaving early. The trip was pretty nice and we had some very nice scenery. In the bus we played a game, where everybody had to write down a problem they had, and the people on the bus would find a solution. When they asked who wanted to present the questions, I said I wanted to do it. So I was presenting the game which was quite fun as well. At around 16:00 we arrived in Wanaka in a nice hostel with a private toilet and bath in our room. As there was too much wind today, we were unable to skydive today. Fortunately, the weatherforecasts for tomorrow are good. So the plan is that I’ll be skydiving tomorrow morning at sunset, which is around 7:00. Then after the skydiving we will head on to Queenstown, the partycapital of New Zealand.
