The next morning we met up with the American couple early, as we were planning to get out of Placencia and make our way to Guatemala. We phoned the guy who was supposed to bring us, but he said he had no time today. We then decided to grab a watertaxi, a taxi, a bus and a boat to finally get to Guatemala. Everything went smooth, so we finally got to Livingston in Guatemala around 15.00 in the afternoon.
On the dock we were greeted by a few guys who wanted to get them to their hostel. One of them offered to take us to the hostel we were planning to go to anyway. We first had to get a stamp from migration. After that we walked to the hostel, which was situated a bit out of town in a swampy area.
The hostel had a good vibe. We had a shower and a few beers and we ordered a massive sea food pizza from a place nearby. That night we had a small hostel party. Jannik and I decided to have a little nap first. After our nap we joined the others and had some more drinks while spinning the wheel of misfortune. At one point one of the volunteers at the hostel had to do a swamp angel. He jumped right in the muddy swamp and moved his arms and legs. He told us later it took him 2 days to get rid of the smell.
Later that night Jannik and I decided to check out the local beach bars as it was a saturrday night. We were the only white people in the bar. The only people on the dance floor were girls facing the same wall while boys were grinding up to them from behind. It was really weird to see. Noone else was dancing but all these boys grinding up to girls. At the end of the night most of the people in the bar were grinding up to girls. The ones who didn’t find a girl were watching the boys grinding.
At 1am the police came by and all the bars had to shut down. The police seems to be very strict on this time, like in any city in Guatemala. Accordingly the president decided four years ago that all bars and clubs have to be quiet after midnight / 1am. Jannik found a local girl who offered us to come with her to an afterparty. The afterparty turned out tto be a hidden bar at someones house. We sat in a backroom of the bar and listened to reggea music. The only people there were us and the guy who lived at the house. We sat and drank some more beers for a few hours. Around 4am we decided to go back to the hostel and have some sleep.
We had a little sleep in the next morning, we then got up and had some breakfast. Afterwards we chilled out at the hostel and drank a specific licor from the region, consisting of coconut rum and herbs. Later on we had a walk through town, walked to the cemetary and then had some typical food, a fish soup called tapado. It took a good hour for the woman to cook the food, but once we got it it was really good with a lot of fish.
The timing was a bit unlucky, as in an hour we were having dinner at the hostel. Thankfully we were still hungry so we sat down and ate some more food, a proper English meal with gravy, Yorkshire pudding and meat, a sunday roast. After dinner we chilled out and then went to sleep as we were going on a tour the next day to a beach called Playa Blanca.
We were on the tour to Playa Blanca with two British girls from the hostel. The first stop was to the ‘seven alteres’. Seven waterfalls connected by natural pools. We had a little walk along the pools, but there was not much to see as it hadn’t rained for quite some time; the waterfalls were not there.
Afterwards we sat down, grabbed a beer. From there the boat ride continued onto a river. After 15 minutes down the river the boat went back because the river became to shallow. We then arrived at Playa Blanca. A tropical beach with white sand and palm trees. Upon arrival I jokingly asked the guy at the beach whether the sand was real or whether he during the night adds white sand to the beach. I basicly asked him because Guatemala doesn’t have that many white beaches. He laughed and confirmed it was all natural, yet when we walked 10 meters into the sea we found rocks.
Afterwards I spoke to the owner of the hostel who told me every year a load of sand is put there to make it a white beach, my suspicions turned out to be right. Nonetheless we had a good time, the weather was nice and hot and laying in the hammocks went pretty well. Once we came back we had some food. We decided to go to sleep fairly early, as the next day we had to get up early again as we were heading to Honduras.
