After arriving in Byron Bay, a really nice town right on the beach I chilled out with the people I met on the mojo surf trip. We went out to party a few nights and did a daytrip to a small town west of Byron Bay called “Nimbin”. It’s the weirdest town I’ve EVER been to… They call it the Amsterdam of Australia, so I thought I would feel right at home there. We went on a tour called Jim’s Alternative Tours. A crazy guy who kept on saying religion is dumb and should not be believed in in this 21st century. It was a hilarious right to Nimbin, which took about 2 hours. He put up the music really loud and everybody was asking what was going on. When we got to Nimbin, I didn’t know what to think of the town. In the end I found out the whole town is full of weed-smoking stoners who make a living by selling weed and space-cookies to tourists like us who come and check out the town. I went to the “museum” and talked to a few locals.. People who happened to be just out of their minds.. All they did all day was smoking weed. Of course they thought I was awesome, being from Amsterdam and all. They couldn’t believe you didn’t had to fear the police overthere while buying or smoking weed. Being in the town was a real weird experience I must say. Then the tour went on to some kind of “Hippy market”. Before we got there, we went onto some kind of “rollercoaster road”. A small road which litterly went up and down the hill. After about 30 minutes we arrived at the market. The people around there were all hippies and it really felt like I went back to the “flower-power” time. Just loads of people with bright colored shirts and long hairs sitting in circles chilling out and playing guitars. I was amazed.. Then the trip went on to a rainforest which is situated inside of a crater. We drove all the way down into the crater and had a small walk to the minyon Falls. Then when we got back we got to taste a true australian fruit a “custard-apple”. We also tasted some famous australian nuts. Then we rode back to Byron Bay and got back at around 18:00.
I decided to travel along with the guys I met on the mojosurf camp. I bought a Greyhound Bus pass and went to the next destination; Surfer’s Paradise.
When I arrived there the town really felt like a spanish costa town. Big hotels next to the beach and palm trees here and there. Although the city is actually called Surfer’s Paradise, it wasn’t all that great for surfing at all. The waves were way better in Byron Bay. Surfer’s Paradise is full of bars, restaurants and a lot of beach of course. But it also contians about all the theme parcs you can think about. Waterparks, WB Movie world and some others. We decided to go to the waterpark the next day. We had the bus at 9:00 and arrived at the waterpark around 10. The park opened exactly at that time, so we had the full day. Good for us was that the holiday season was already over and we were there during a week-day. So we virtually had all the rides for our selfs.. No queues anywhere. We had a great time at the waterpark, a true blast. That night we had a pub-crawl. We went to 5 different pubs with about all the backpackers in town. About 7 hostels were participating, so all the clubs we went to were filled with backpackers. It was a fun night, and for some of us the last night as some of the people in the group decided to go back to Sydney. The next day the trip went on to Brisbane. About an hours drive from Surfer’s Paradise. I’ll prolly stay in Brisbane for about 2 nights. Then the trip is on to Noosa, from where we’re going to visit Steve Irwins’ World Famous Australian Zoo.
That’s it for now again! I’ll report soon with new updates!
