Arequipa & Ica

After partying all night at the day of the festival, I slept for a big part of the day in the tent in the backyard of the hostel. I then went to have some lunch with George and Kelsey, a girl from California. Afterwards I went to check out the local market which was quite interesting too. Once back in my hostel I met up with Jannik who came to visit as he was in the neighbourhood. We had some dinner in the hostel and afterwards we went for a few drinks in the hostel bar and we had some nice chats about the last few months of traveling. Not too long later I went off to bed as I was still fairly tired.

As I wanted to finish my trip with a big bang, I decided to go and do the highest bungy jump of south America here in Cusco. The bungy is a 122 meter jump from a platform located in a valley just outside of Cusco. I grabbed a taxi to do the jump side,, and I invited George to come along to watch me jump. He decided to bring his big lens camera for some close-up shots of my jump. I also decided to record my jump on DVD, as this was only 30 soles more (7 euro). The guys strapped me into the elastic cord and up we went with a little cage to a height of 122 meters. The view was amazing up there, but insanely high.. – Although not as high as the bungy in New Zealand last year. The jump was excellent and I was pumped with Adrenaline. Afterwards we headed back to the hostel. We then went to watch the final match of Germany – Spain in a bar nearby. Afterwards I took some photos of the main square and then went back to the hostel to watch my DVD. Afterwards I changed into my jeans and locked my valueables away in the luggage storage and went off to buy some souvenirs. Once I came back I had some dinner and then we got ready to catch the bus to Arequipa. The bus journey took about 10 hours and was overnight.

In the early morning we arrived in Arequipa. We grabbed a taxi and checked into our hostel. We had some breakfast and a shower. Afterwards we were planning to go into town to explore the city. Only then I found out my camera was gone out of my bag. I searched through all of my luggage, but it wasn´t there. Immediately I contacted the hostel in Cusco, but noone had found my camera. I kind of started to freak out as it contained the last 4 weeks of photos of my trip. I was amazingly annoyed, but thankfully George had been taking a lot of similar photos for the last week, so at least I could get those back from him. We then went into town anyway and had some lunch. After lunch we did a tour of White water rafting in the nearby river which was absolute great fun. I managed to stay dry in the boat, but at the end of the 2 hours the guide flipped the boat on purpose and we all got soaking wet in the incredibly cold ice-water. Once back in the hostel we had a warm shower and then we had some dinner in the hostel. Afterwards we were both quite tired, but still we wanted to go out and party. After a few drinks we were feeling a lot better so off we went into town on friday night. The night became a great night with lots of more drinks in the local disco´s of Arequipa.

The next day I didn´t do much constructive. I got back in to the hostel fairly late. Afterwards we decided to go and do some go-karting next door in the kart-center. We went with a big group of the hostel which was incredibly great. Of course of security meassures they had never heard of.. No helmets or protective gear, but great fun it was. After racing for quite a few rounds (15 minutes costed about 2 euro´s). Once back at the hostel we started to have a few drinks as it was George´s birthday that night. We went out for some more drinks in town which was great fun. George ordered an insane big bucket of Long Island with a bunch of straws. Needless to say again it became a great night out.

The next day I decided to make my way up to Ica. I checked out of the hostel and booked a bus for that night. I said bye to George and Kelsey, who had just arrived and then grabbed my bus. The busride was a nice one with food and drinks included. Around 8 in the morning I arrived in Ica. I grabbed a taxi to a hostel nearby and checked in. This place is very famous for its sandboarding. I was incredibly surprised, as the whole town happens to be surrounded by massive – and I mean MASSIVE sanddunes which spread over 480KM´s in width. I went to check out town, which is really small and then had a little sleep as I still felt tired of the ride. That afternoon I booked myself onto a tour to do some sandboarding. The sandboarding turned out to be INCREDIBLE. What they basicly do is drive like maniacs with these beach buggies across the sand dunes as if it were a rollercoaster. Loads of adrenaline and excellent fun. After a while we stopped, we grabbed the sandboards out of the back of the buggy and then we went boarding down these massive dunes which was heaps of fun too. Once down our driver was waiting for us to pick us up and to drive us to the next dune. We spent a good 2 hours driving and boarding around on the dunes which was great. Once back at the hostel I had a few drinks in the hostel bar. I met up with a guy from Rotterdam and a girl from Melbourne. We had some nice conversations and had a nice BBQ together. We had quite a few drinks, so the night became quite a good one.

The next day I woke up late. I had a shower and some food and then went to pack my bag. That morning Cath and Eve had just arrived at the hostel – by complete coincedence. They thought by now I was already back home, so they were quite surprised to see me walking around the hostel. It was good to see them again.. We had a little talk and then it was time for me to catch my bus to the final destination of the trip – Lima. I grabbed a taxi to the busterminal and got on the bus. I was sitting next to a woman from England. We had a nice talk about my travels, while all of a sudden she started to faint and puke. I tried to wake her up but she wasn´t responding. I was nearly freaking out as I had no clue what to do. After a minute or two she was conscious again. I told her she scared the shit out of me. She told me it wasn´t the first time she had to faint, which was absolutely scary. After 5 hours we arrived in Lima. I caught a taxi to my hostel and then went for some pizza around the corner at the Pizzahut.
Tonight I am not sure whether I will go out, all in all it is my last oppertunity to go and do some partying in South America, so I´ll see what I´ll do. Tomorrow I am going to explore Lima as that will be the last day of my trip before catching my flijght back home.. Quite surreal to be honest..

More news soon from my final day in Lima!
